
Quantum computing may still sound like a distant technological breakthrough, but the security implications are much more immediate. The concern is that sufficiently powerful quantum computers could eventually break many of today’s widely used encryption systems, putting sensitive data at risk even before the machines capable of doing it actually exist.
The real takeaway is that organizations cannot afford to wait for a working quantum computer before responding. Migrating away from vulnerable encryption takes years, and attackers can already be collecting encrypted data today with the hope of decrypting it later. The quantum threat is therefore less about predicting the exact arrival date and more about recognizing that the preparation window is already open.
