The AI industry is drawing a new line in the sand. NVIDIA, Microsoft, IBM, CrowdStrike, Hugging Face, and more than 30 other organizations have launched the Open Secure AI Alliance to develop open-source tools that strengthen AI security. One notable absence is OpenAI, which has not joined the coalition and has not publicly explained why.
The alliance argues that open models and shared security tools give defenders greater transparency and flexibility when responding to cyber threats. Whether OpenAI eventually joins or continues to focus on its own security approach remains to be seen, but its absence highlights the growing divide between companies championing open AI ecosystems and those building primarily closed, proprietary models.
